Whether they run a nursing home, facilitate a CCRC, or work at an assisted living facility, your clients have a tough job when it comes to retaining staff. The nursing home and healthcare industry are one of the roughest industries when it comes to employee turnover, due to the effect that stress can have on an aide or another employee. They are met with not only intense physical demands day-to-day, but mental and emotional ones as well.

Over time, this stress and wear-and-tear from working with individuals who have physical and cognitive limitations can lead to discouragement and low staff morale. In addition to this, the status of our economy and questions due to the enforcement of the ACA add extra stress. Most assisted living facility managers want to pay their staff more and give them more, but the money just might not be there. Most leaders know their staff is stressed, but don’t know how to encourage them.

Experts in the nursing home and healthcare industry stress that it’s important for assisted living leaders to recognize that recognition is not the same thing as appreciation; meaning it’s one thing to be thanked for a job well done but true appreciation is shown in additional ways. So how can your clients show that their staff is appreciated, to boost their morale?

McKnight’s contributing guest writer Paul White, Ph.D., lists the following key actions for assisted living leaders to implement in order to help their employees feel valued:

Communicate Regularly: In any industry, most people need more than just their annual review to feel that they are valued. Frequent feedback, whether complimentary or constructive, is essential.

Individualized and Personal: Managers need to recognize the achievements of each of their staff members on an individual basis. Thanking your team as a whole is great, but it doesn’t make the one nurse who stayed overtime and missed a family event feel better about his or her personal situation.

Be Authentic: One of the largest complaints about employee recognition activities is that they feel contrived. Any message being sent to a staff member should be genuine; otherwise the facility may just be wasting their time.

When employee morale is down, staff starts to leave, and with such a high turnover, assisted living administrators are forced to hire more staff as quickly as possible. This could potentially lead to under trained staff, resulting in Workers’ Compensation Risks for your clients as well as Employee Benefits Liability risks, if employees feel their needs are being ignored due to a stretched-thin staff.
