This type of good communications provides valuable insight into the medical history and preferences of the resident, increases family involvement and satisfaction, and can certainly help to reduce complaints or even prevent lawsuits from occurring against your clients’ senior living facility.

According to Dr. Eleanor Feldman Barbera, Ph.D. and contributing writer for McKnights.com, even the best quality facilities have problems with communication. She cites many examples, such as:

  • At one facility, Barbera noticed that each floor had a notebook where staff members could leave messages for the social workers. However, social workers never read the notebooks.
  • At another facility, Barebera stated that many staff members did not have the training that was necessary to determine what written communications were urgent and should be prioritized over others.
  • Barbera stresses that consultants are a integral part of the functioning of most long-term care organizations, yet they’re rarely made part of the organization’s internal email or phone system.

These are just a few of the common communication issues throughout numerous senior living facilities. Overall, your clients should be inquiring within their staff as to how to improve communication.
