In April of 2014, a very sad and tragic homicide occurred at a nursing home in Houston, Texas. A 56-year-old man had an altercation with his two roommates, and during the altercation assaulted the two men with the arm of his wheelchair, ultimately leading to their deaths. Nobody can say if this incident could have been prevented in some way, but it does raise the question of if, and how, nursing home staff can serve the mental health needs of those in the senior living industry.

One of the most important steps your Nursing Home Insurance clients can take is to train their staff to recognize signs of distress and potential mental illness in residents. Having a system in place can allow information to be communicated effectively. As Eleanor Feldman Barbera, Ph D. and contributing writer for McKnight’s, points out, staff should not and cannot be expected to make a mental health diagnosis, however they need to be able to recognize when a resident is behaving differently or inappropriately, and communicate it to their boss. Mental illness is a serious health condition and should not be treated lightly.

Barbera also recommends that those staff working in the senior living industry allow their residents access to a psychiatrist on a consistent basis. This psychiatrist should be informed of any high-risk factors the resident has, such as a history of depression or other mental health problems, substance abuse history, a recent serious medical diagnosis, or if they are a younger resident.

One last recommendation to serve the mental health needs of those who live within the senior living industry is to hold behavioral health rounds on a weekly basis at a nursing home, assisted living facility, etc. This allows the staff to discuss difficult situations with the mental health consultants and to create a unified and consistent plan. Your clients should ensure that aides and other essential team members are present- those who know the residents best.
